Interested In A Flight Training Program? What Prospective Students Need To Know Before Applying

by Nora Gardner

Becoming a pilot can open the doors to many exciting career paths that are both intriguing and profitable. But flight training programs may not be the best choice for everyone. If you want to become a pilot and are interested in applying to a flight training program through a flight school, college, or university in your area, the following information will help you determine whether it is likely to be a good fit for your needs and expectations.

Look for a flight school with FAA certification

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) maintains certifications for flight schools that comply with certain safety and training guidelines. In addition, the FAA can provide valuable resources that new trainees can use to research specific aircraft and other information that can be helpful to them during training and later when seeking employment as a pilot.

In addition to verifying FAA certification, aspiring students can ask airport personnel for information about specific schools they are considering that utilize their facilities when training. Doing this can help make students aware of past accidents or issues concerning a particular training school or instructor.

Be prepared for fees associated with flight training

Flight training can require a significant financial investment, and students who are considering enrolling need to be aware of the potential costs involved. In addition to the cost of the class, including books, materials, and instructor fees, students may be expected to pay for some or all of the following costs:

  • rental fees for the aircraft used during the training session
  • flight insurance
  • fuel and oil costs
  • landing and layover fees
  • processing fees and taxes

Some airports may have fee schedules that offer a cost savings for booking training time when the facility is less congested, such as between peak usage times.

Make sure that the course offered fits the type of license desired

Before applying to any flight training program, it is important that students verify that the coursework qualifies for the type of pilot's license they hope to receive. For instance, the training required to pilot a small private plane will be vastly different from what is required to become a commercial airline pilot.

Each flight training program should be able to provide detailed information regarding the entire course syllabus, lesson plans, and methods of training. In addition, prospective students may also be allowed to choose whether to train in certain types of aircraft. For instance, the student may be able to choose between a late model aircraft that costs more per use or a less expensive, older aircraft that will be more economical for their needs.
